First settled in 1762 as the Plantation of Jericho, Hancock was renamed after John Hancock and officially incorporated in 1776. The town offers a rich historical and religious past and is one of only three towns in Massachusetts whose local phone service was not provided by the former Bell System.

The Berkshire Museum is just 15 miles south and features seven galleries with historical and contemporary collections.
